With this update we are excited to introduce Dark Mode, which has been requested by our users for a long time. This update also brings major improvements in speed, better navigation, and enhanced privacy controls, designed to help you work faster and more securely. Read on to explore all the new features!
Dark Mode Compatibility
One of the most requested features has arrived! WinRAR now fully supports Dark Mode, allowing you to switch seamlessly based on Windows' color settings. Whether you prefer Dark Mode for aesthetic reasons or to reduce eye strain, this update ensures a more comfortable and modern user experience. Simply enable Dark Mode in WinRAR under "Settings/Interface." Users can choose to synchronize with Windows' Dark Mode settings or enable or disable Dark Mode directly within WinRAR, ensuring a consistent look across applications.
Performance Boost with Large Memory Pages
WinRAR 7.10 introduces the "Large memory pages" option, which significantly improves archiving and extraction speeds. This feature - found in "Settings/System" or using the -mlp command line switch - allocates memory in 2 MB pages instead of the default 4 KB, improving efficiency, especially when dealing with large RAR archives. In order to enable this feature, users need the "Lock pages in memory" privilege. WinRAR offers assistance in assigning this privilege to user accounts. Once granted, the feature will be available for use. A Windows restart is required to activate the new setting.
Enhanced Privacy Controls with Mark of the Web
The new "Zone value only" option in the "Settings/Security" dialog allows users to control how much Mark of the Web data is included with their archives. Users can choose to include only essential security zone information or all available fields. This option is particularly useful for users who share files and wish to minimize privacy risks associated with detailed file source data. Users of the command line version can use the switch -om[-|1][=list] for Mark of the Web propagation.
Enhanced Navigation and Interface Improvements
The General "Settings" dialog has been reorganized into two sections: "Interface" and "System", and now uses vertical instead of horizontal tabs for a more modern and user-friendly layout. Meanwhile, the Windows 11 context menu has also been revamped for improved organization. Compression profiles are now positioned above extraction commands, similar to the legacy context menu layout, making it easier to access your most-used functions. Plus, separator lines have been added to clearly distinguish between archive opening, extraction, and archiving command groups, streamlining the process and reducing clutter.
Compatibility Update
WinRAR now requires Windows 7 x64 or later. Windows Vista is no longer supported. However, 32-bit self-extracting modules are still included in the 64-bit package to ensure broader compatibility for users who need them.
Miscellaneous Enhancements and Fixes
These and all other updates, such as faster extraction of NTFS-compressed files, more efficient handling of recovery records as well as better multi-processor utilization for higher compression speed, bring faster performance and enhanced customization options to your WinRAR experience.
